Md.
Rafikul Islam sells Bangladeshi afternoon snacks such as papad and alu puri in
front of Shilpokala Academy in M. M Ali Road- Chittagong. He cooks these snacks
on his four wheeled pushcart using a small kerosene cooker, a pot and oil. He
drains different kinds of prepped snacks in to the hot oil based on the
customer’s order. The cooking takes only one or two minutes. Rafikul serves
these food items with spicy chutney garnished with fresh onions, tomatoes
and tamarind to the customers who surround his cart. I was observing him for
about a half an hour. I tried some of his snack and indeed those are tasty, but
oily. Rafikul was very busy with the young boys and girls who order different
kinds of snacks.

I waited patiently to get some information about Rafikul. He
is thirty one years old and a migrant worker in Chittagong. He is originally
from Comilla. He lives with an extended family which consists of seventeen members.
It includes his wife, mother, two sisters, four brothers and their wives with
five children. His four brothers do better jobs in Comilla. Rafikul went to
school until the second grade. He earns 500 BDT from street food vending per
day. As he says, his vending is challenging as police and the authorities of
Shilpokala Academy try to evict him from his trading spot. Unpredictable
weather especially rain also challenges Rafikul’s trading some days in the
year.

around M.M Ali Road to sell his vegetables.

His family
includes his wife, two daughters and two sons. All his children study in school
and all the expenses are covered by Abus’s earning. As he says, constant
harassment of the policemen troubles his street vending and affects his daily
income.
